About

Nicola Curreli received his M.Sc. degree from the University of Genoa, Italy, in 2016, and his Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the Italian Institute of Technology – IIT, Genoa, in 2020. After completing the Ph.D. degree, he held a Fellow position with Graphene Labs – IIT, where he contributed to the Graphene Core 2 Project as part of the Graphene Flagship initiative. In 2019, Nicola was a visiting Researcher with the Physics and Mechanical Engineering Departments at Columbia University in New York City, NY, USA. Between 2022 and 2023, he was a visiting Researcher at the Molecular Foundry, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA, USA. These research visits were made possible through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie RISE Action "SONAR H2020." Currently, Nicola Curreli is a Researcher with the Functional Nanosystems – IIT. Starting from 2023, he has been the recipient of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Global Fellowship "2DTWIST". The fellowship is in collaboration with the Transport at Nanoscale Interfaces Laboratory at Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA) in Switzerland.

His research focuses on the investigation of low-dimensional materials, including their characterization and application in the fields of electronics and photonics. Under his project "2DTWIST," he aims to develop an innovative technique enabling active, dynamic, and automated control of Moiré geometry in 2D heterostructures using electrostatic actuation. This approach will facilitate precise and in-situ manipulation of the twist between adjacent layers, enabling exploration of the influence of Moiré geometry on emergent properties. Moreover, this technique will enable the achievement of controlled angle-dependent properties within a single device.
