A stepping stone in your research career

IIT gives graduate students the opportunity to earn a doctoral degree by making good use of its state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities. All our supervisors have an international standing, interdisciplinarity is the rule and the environment is international; in short, if you want a challenging, but rewarding start for a career in research, we are here for you. 

IIT is not a degree-awarding body though.  

PhD students are registered in a number of Italian & International Universities IIT has agreements with, and the Universities award the degree, in addition of being ultimately responsible for the organizational and training aspects of the PhD. IIT provides the research environment and finances the bursaries that the Universities will eventually award to the students, after a public selection process.

IIT is an excellent research institution. We have already said it.
It also has a mission to link basic research with technological development and technology transfer. This is a plus, if you are interested in understanding the potential economical and societal implications of your research. Another distinctive trait of IIT is independence; our research groups are financially and intellectually independent, IIT provides them with the means and the freedom to concentrate on what they think is worth investigating.
On the top of these favourable points, we have established an umbrella structure, with the aim to give a distinctive IIT flavour independent of which IIT centre you are in, or which University you are registered at. With time, we aim to harmonize administrative procedures and create communal training programmes, and most importantly provide a single contact point for PhD-related queries.
In this framework, we have also launched (2021) an IIT-managed doctoral programme in collaboration with the Open University as a quality control- and degree awarding body. This programme is delivered through an Affiliated Research Centre (ARC@IIT) and you can gather more information about it by clicking here.
