My research activity focuses on the development of innovative ultrasound transducer configurations based on constructive beam interference methods (Bessel beam diffraction, wavefront shaping) for non-invasive, focused, ultra-selective, deep and superficial brain stimulation.  As a biomedical engineer, how to build a reliable and efficient device or system and how its modelling can derive globally emergent system characteristics, are the central questions that drive most of my research. Because real human systems are complex, answering these questions requires careful design and implementation that attends the details of the real scenario. Through the development of numerical realistic models, the dosimetric analysis allows the exploration of the stimulation parameters (amplitude, phase, frequency of the ultrasonic signal; geometry and position of the transducers) and helps to understand the impact of each parameter on the effects induced in the brain by the ultrasound stimulation. The theoretical model act as a predictive tool for setting up the most suitable experimental or clinical procedure (controlled modulation of some specific neurological processes).
