Davide is a PhD student in Cognitive robotics, interaction and rehabilitation technologies at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia of Genova under the supervision of prof. Cristina Becchio.

He studied Psychology at the University of Torino and, in 2015, obtained his Master degree in Science of Mind with a dissertation on the relationship between hand kinematics and object weight in both natural and pantomimed reach-to-grasp movements.

Understanding motor planning and recognition of pantomimed actions

Davide is currently involved in the study of the relationship between the intention to pretend an action and action execution. Davide’s project combines behavioral, kinematic and electrophysiological techniques in order to investigate how movements kinematics relate to perception and decision via action observation. In particular, he is investigating how real and pantomimed actions are planned and executed as well as how these actions are processed and recognized.

Recently he spent six months at the Central European University (CEU) of Budapest, where he collaborated with the Social Mind and Body (SOMBY) group. By using electroencephalography (EEG), he investigated the neural underpinning of the ability to detect the nature of an observed action together with the investigation of the temporal properties of this neural activity. In particular, he explored the relative contribution of context and kinematics in real and pantomimed action processing.
