Domenico Genchi is a materials scientist, working as postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Materials Interfaces (CMI) of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT). He obtained his PhD in Science and Engineering of Materials and Nanostructures at the University of Padua in 2023, with a dissertation on "Multilayer Hyperbolic Metamaterials for Tunable Nanophotonics Applications". His research activity so far was focused on metal-dielectric optical metamaterials, nanocomposites and nanostructures for nonlinear optics, nanophotonics and plasmonics applications. Currently he is working on the two-photon polymerization of functional micro-/nano-structures and fabrication of laser-induced graphene by multi-parametric direct laser writing as well as on the fabrication of micro-electromechanical flexible strain sensors by ultra-precise dispensing deposition plus ultrathin film transfer technology. He has experience with: deposition of thin films and multilayers by magnetron sputtering and spin coating; direct laser writing; XTPL depositions; morphological characterization by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and profilometry; optical characterization by spectroscopic ellipsometry, UV-VIS spectroscopy, integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy; use of high-power lasers and optical setups; ultrafast nonlinear optical characterization by the z-scan technique; simulation and modeling of optical metamaterials by effective medium theory and scattering matrix method; Python coding. His interests also span phase-change materials, perovskites, Van der Waals heterostructures, laser-based micro- and nano-fabrication, laser materials processing for industrial applications, optical sensing, thermal photonics and photovoltaics. He is fascinated by the concept of "metamaterial" (from the ancient greek μετα = "go beyond"), that gives the freedom to design and artificially fabricate multifunctional materials at the nanoscale from scratch, yielding novel properties not existing in nature, and tailorable features to be applied in several different fields with extreme versatility. He strongly believes in interdisciplinarity, collaboration, and teamwork. For him integrity, respect and inclusivity come first before everything else.
