Just as we did our best during the Covid emergency, also in the normal performance of our function we place people at the center of the organization, shaping an environment capable of facilitating well-being and personal growth. The health of those who work with us is the starting point with which we measure the effectiveness of our work.
Our Support and Services
Bureaucracy is often a stumbling block when changing work environment and even nation.
For this reason, we are committed to offering our international staff support for the management of bureaucratic procedures that are necessary for the transfer and relocation to Italy.
Before arriving at IIT, we guide future colleagues in the process of obtaining an entry visa, simplifying relations with the Embassies and Consulates and coordinating the necessary procedures and appointments with the Italian Prefectures and Police Headquarters.
Once arrived in Italy, foreign researchers will receive our support in obtaining:
• residence permit, essential for your stay in Italy;
• health card that entitles you to receive health care from the National Health Service;
• registration of your residence.
We also lend you a hand in compiling and sending international family reunification practices to allow your families to join you here.
Finally, thanks to dedicated agreements, we guarantee our support in opening a bank account, requesting a subscription for public transport and finding accommodation through contacts with various real estate agencies.
We offer all IIT staff a benefit, in the form of a private health insurance plan. The cost of the insurance is fully covered by the Foundation, while the taxation remains in charge of the beneficiary and is applied pursuant the Italian law.
If requested, the insurance is also applicable to family members of the staff. In this case, depending on the role covered by the beneficiary, a contribution may be requested.
Moreover, for all staff, IIT takes out an insurance policy against occupational accidents in addition to the mandatory insurance for accidents at work provided by INAIL. This insurance policy, for some categories of IIT personnel, also covers non-professional accidents.
Lastly, in order to offer tangible support in case of need during the COVID-19 pandemic, a benefits package was provided to all throughout 2020, consisting of insurance coverage and post-hospitalization assistance service.
To facilitate the staff in completing their annual tax return, IIT has an agreement with a tax assistance center. To those who request it, it is possible to meet the consultants both virtually and directly at the IIT center where they work, paying for the service at a reduced rate compared to the standard one.
Additionally, all foreign staff and repatriated Italian staff will be able to count on our support in requesting tax breaks related to periods of work abroad.
For more complicated situations, staff coming from abroad can be put in contact with an additional consulting company that specializes in tax, social security and international labor law.
For senior researchers (in Tenure Track, Tenured or holders of specific coordination assignments) who come from abroad, IIT recognizes the reimbursement of the moving costs only as follows:
- in the event of a relocation within the European geographical area, the actual moving costs which you incurred will be reimbursed, up to a maximum of Euro 3,500;
- if the relocation takes place from non-European countries towards Italy, the actual moving costs which you incurred will be reimbursed, up to a maximum of Euro 6,000.
The Human Capital and Organizational Development Directorate offers assistance for any need related to the management of people and the employment relationship, on an ongoing basis from Monday to Friday thanks to a front desk. It is a physical and virtual space where you can go chat to the specialists of different areas, according to a calendar established for each topic (for example contracts, pensions, support for non-EU collaborators).
We are constantly working to expand the range of discounts for outdoor activities, restaurants, museums, theaters, sports centers, language schools, real estate agencies, hotels and mobility services and more, through ad hoc agreements with service managers.
All scientific staff are free to organize their activities autonomously with no time constraints. In addition, access to the laboratories is granted 24 hours a day, including weekends, to allow all researchers to manage their time in the most suitable way.
The daily working hours for the technical and administrative staff are usually set at 8 hours and the beginning and end of the workday are flexible within the limits set by IIT as follows:
- beginning 8.00 - 10.00
- end 17.00 - 19.00
The technical-administrative staff, to which the pay for overtime work is recognized, can use the Hour-Bank for all the overtime hours worked, in order to choose whether to use those extra hours for remuneration or for leave time.
In addition, IIT promotes the training and health care of its personnel, through specific permits allowed for participation in courses aimed at obtaining educational qualifications and permits for cycles of treatment and medical examinations.
To encourage the participation of the technical and administrative staff in scientific experimental activities, a paid permit is provided for those who propose themselves, as a voluntary subject for such activities.
Teleworking is a tool dedicated to the technical and administrative staff, to allow everyone to find a more appropriate balance between private life and work.
A written agreement with IIT is required through a specific procedure that will give you the opportunity to carry out your job from home for a maximum of 2 days a week.
Furthermore, in the event in which the Municipality where your workplace is based issues a red alert notice for reasons of force majeure, extraordinary teleworking is guaranteed to all those who request it.
To support the scientific staff with both the well-being of their families and the continuation of research, we adopt the "stop the clock" policy, which is in addition to the mandatory parental leave for birth/ adoption/ custody of children provided for by current legislation. The working relationship and the scientific evaluations envisaged for career paths are suspended for the period of mandatory/parental leave, in order to allow the staff who benefit from it, to quietly interrupt scientific research in an important period of their life. Once back, the scientific staff can recover the periods of suspension and terminate the previously interrupted activity, thus avoiding the interruption of their career path and in fact benefiting from a policy aimed at safeguarding gender equality in professional development.
For technical and administrative staff, the measures laid down by the legislation in force on the protection of parenthood shall be adopted.
Lastly, IIT stipulates specific agreements that guarantee access to discounts for kindergartens and schools for staff families.
It is a tool aimed at facilitating the work placement in Italy of the partners of Principal Investigators relocating from abroad, in order to ease the integration of the entire family unit in our country.
For this purpose, IIT has entered into an agreement with one of the main Italian agencies specialized in recruitment and selection: INTOO. We do not guarantee the hiring, but we provide the partner of our Principal Investigators with all the tools necessary to access an effective and satisfying job search.
