IIT Global
Connecting research, talent and innovation worldwide
IIT Global defines the Italian Institute of Technology’s international positioning within the global scientific ecosystem. International engagement is a strategic dimension through which the Foundation strengthens scientific excellence, attracts and develops talent, and increases the impact of its research and innovation activities.
Through IIT Global, the Institute pursues selective, long‑term collaborations with outstanding partners worldwide, acting as a credible and proactive contributor to international research and innovation agendas.
Why international
IIT operates in a competitive and interconnected global research landscape, where international engagement is required for scientific leadership. Collaborating with partners worldwide enables IIT to strengthen scientific excellence, attract and develop top-level talent, and access expertise, infrastructure, and funding opportunities.
Internationalisation also supports the visibility, relevance, and long-term impact of IIT’s research and innovation activities. Through a structured, institution-wide approach, IIT Global ensures that international engagement is strategic, selective, and aligned with the Institute’s mission and priorities.
How IIT works internationally
IIT pursues international engagement through a coherent set of strategic instruments designed to support long-term, high-impact collaboration. These instruments address different objectives and time horizons while remaining aligned with IIT’s scientific priorities and institutional mission.
Through IIT Global, international activities are structured to ensure coherence, selectivity, and critical mass, enabling IIT to operate effectively within leading global research and innovation ecosystems.
Strategic partnerships and joint initiatives
IIT establishes partnerships and agreements with selected international institutions to develop shared research agendas, co‑design initiatives and promote sustained scientific interaction.
Moreover, IIT promotes international training and mobility opportunities, including joint PhD programmes, postdoctoral exchanges, visiting researchers and staff mobility schemes, fostering cross‑fertilisation of ideas and skills.
IIT’s agreements differ in scope, level of detail, and purpose, ranging from strategic partnerships to specific research activities.
Click the cards below to learn more about each type of agreement.
Agreement Framework agreements set the general terms and conditions for collaboration between IIT and its partners. They define rules of engagement and identify common areas of interest. They can enable specific activities through implementation agreements.
Agreements Implementation agreements set out the execution of specific joint activities under an institutional or framework agreement. They specify objectives, deliverables, timelines, and resources, turning collaboration into concrete projects.
Agreements Research agreements regulate specific research collaborations between IIT and external partners. They are standalone agreements, not derived from a prior framework, and define all aspects of a joint research programme, including objectives, responsibilities, and resource allocation.
Agreements Higher education agreements support collaboration in education and training, primarily in relation to PhD programmes and student activities. They define the conditions for academic cooperation, including supervision, funding, and the management of research outcomes.
