Non-coding RNAs and RNA-based therapeutics
Stefano Gustincich is the Director of the Center for Clinical and Computational Genomics (C3G) at IIT in Aosta and the Head of the research line “Non-coding RNA and RNA-based therapeutics” at the Center for Human Technologies (CHT) of IIT in Erzelli, Genoa.
After receiving his PhD in Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology from SISSA in Trieste, he spent ten years in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He later became Full Professor of Applied Biology at SISSA in Trieste, where he established his laboratory thanks to the Career Development Award from the Armenise-Harvard Foundation. He was awarded the National Prize for Innovation in Biotechnology.
His laboratory investigates the role of non-coding DNA in neurodegenerative diseases. Among his major scientific contributions are the discovery of SINEUPs, a new class of non-coding RNAs capable of enhancing protein translation, and the whole-genome sequencing of more than 2,000 patients affected by Parkinson’s disease.
