Leonardo Mattos is a Team Leader within the Biomedical Robotics area of the IIT's Advanced Robotics Department. He is also the Principal Investigator (PI) and Project Coordinator of the EU FP7 project μRALP - Micro-Technologies and Systems for Robot-Assisted Laser Phonomicrosurgery. Leonardo began working with robots and automation systems while attending the COTUCA-UNICAMP technical high school in Campinas, Brazil, from which he earned a technical degree in electronics in 1992. He maintained his involvement in automation while attending the University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil, from which he received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1998.After college Leonardo gained industry exposure and hands-on experience with robots and automated machines while working for Fanuc America Corporation in the United States. His interests in research and development of new technologies, however, took him back to school, and he started graduate studies at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 2001. There he joined the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Machines (CRIM) as a Research Assistant, where he worked in several multi-disciplinary projects in the areas of bio-robotics, medical robotics, e-textiles, evolutionary robotics, mobile robotics, instrumentation, and acoustics. Leonardo earned his M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2004, and his Ph.D. degree also in Electrical Engineering in 2007, both from NCSU. Since October 2007 he has been a researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, Italy. Leonardo is a member of the IEEE, IEEE EMBS, IEEE RAS, and Eta Kappa Nu (HKN).
Leonardo’s research interests include robot-assisted surgery, microsurgery and micromanipulation, human-computer interfaces, computer vision, teleoperation, adaptive controllers and automation. He is mainly focused on the design of novel user interfaces, automated controllers, and on the integration of systems to improve the consistency, efficiency, and safety of operations traditionally performed manually. His research includes robot-assisted laser microsurgery, robot-assisted biomanipulations, micromanipulation automation, medical image processing, and assistive systems for people with disabilities. Leonardo’s research involves strong collaborations with medical doctors and neuroscience researchers. He is very interested in technology transfer to areas that can directly impact the health and well-being of people.
