About

Giorgio Tortarolo studied engineering at the Dipartimento di Informatica, Bioingegneria, Robotica e Ingegneria dei Sistemi (DIBRIS) of the University of Genoa, and got his master degree (110/110 cum laude, right of publication) in collaboration with Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in 2015, with the thesis titled "Modular integration of a STED imaging system into a custom confocal microscope". After his graduation, he had a six-month internship in IIT, during which he became more familiar with different novel super-resolution microscopy techniques such as Stimulated Emission Depletion Microscopy (STED). After this period he moved to the U.S. and collaborated with ISS, a well-established microscopy company, to integrate a STED system into their main commercial microscope. This collaboration resulted in the release from the company of a novel time-resolved STED microscope on the market. In November 2016 Giorgio won the PhD scholarship in Engineering at the University of Genoa and joined the Molecular Microscopy and Spectroscopy group led by Giuseppe Vicidomini in IIT. Giorgio is currently focusing on Image Scanning Microscopy, a novel super-resolution technique, and on the implementation of a real-time, FPGA-based Single Particle Tracking system.
