Stefano Persano holds a M.Sc. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from University of Salento (Italy) and he obtained a Ph.D. in Nanomedicine from the University of Salento (Italy), under the supervision of Dr. Pierpaolo Pompa (Italian Institute of Technology, IIT) and Prof. Mauro Ferrari (Houston Methodist Research Institute). After completing his Ph.D., he joined the Viral Immunotherapy Lab at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), University of Ottawa (Canada) where he worked on the development of heterologous vaccines based on antigen-mRNA and oncolytic viruses. Before joining IIT as Marie Curie experienced researcher (MSCA-IF 2018), he served as Scientist of the Formulation Development and Testing Department in BioNTech SE, a german biotech for vaccine development founded by Prof. Uğur Şahin. Currently, his research focuses on the use of nanostructured delivery systems for the development of novel immunomodulatory and in-situ vaccination strategies aimed to "reshape" the tumour immune microenvironment and boost immune surveillance in cancer.
