Edmondo Battista pursued his Laurea degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in October 2005, at University of Naples “Federico II”. Later on, he joined University of Magna Graecia of Catanzaro for the Doctoral School in Biomedical and Computer Engineering, at Biomaterials Lab of Dept of Experimental and Clinical Medicine. In January 2010 he defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled "Bioactivation of Polyester Scaffold Surface for Tissue Engineering: Surveying onto Immobilization and Effective Presentation of RGD-Peptide at Cell-Material Interface" with supervision of Ing. Filippo Causa.
The major topics of his Ph.D. research are in the field of modification and bioactivation of polymer surfaces acting as assay platforms and culture supports for tissue engineering, drug delivery and chemical analysis. Particular emphasis is laid on the chemical and physical surface characterization by using spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, Raman, SEM, AFM, CLSM) and specific colorimetric assays to the quantification of engrafted signals directly on the solid support. In addition the surface characterizations were complemented by studying the adsorption of bacteriophage and proteins to the metallic and polymeric surfaces. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the process were investigated by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and the effect of serum protein adsorption on the presentation of bioactive compound was addressed in-vitro conditions.
From April 2004 to January 2005 he is undergraduate internship at Inbios srl, in Naples, a biotech company active in the R&D and production of peptides and peptidomimetics for pharmaceutical research. In the October 2005 he defended a research thesis on “Supramolecular Aggregates with Bioactive Peptides as Contrast Agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging”, with supervision of Prof. Giancarlo Morelli at IBB-CNR and CIRPeB of University of Naples “Federico II”.
