He is also a Senior Researcher at IIT since June 2008 & is helping to set up a new Robotic Surgery Group for IIT. He has a PhD in Medical Robotics and was awarded a DSc. in 2001 for his international contribution to Robotic and Computer Aided Surgery systems. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2005 and is also a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and was a recent Chair of their Medical Engineering Board. He started the Mechatronics in Medicine Group in 1988 which now has an international reputation for its work in Robotic and Computer Assisted Surgery. He has developed a number of robotic surgery and training systems and achieved a "world first" when his special purpose robot, "PROBOT", was used in human clinical prostatectomy trials in April 1991. Since then he has produced a number of special purpose robots for surgery.

Brian is an Expert Reviewer of the UK Hamlyn Robotic Surgery Centre and President Elect of the New Technologies in Medicie section of the Royal Society of Medicien, UK.  He is Chair of the Program Committee for the 2014 Milan Int. Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery Conf., and a Member of the Executive of the International Society.

He has been a frequent invited speaker, internationally, on Robotics and Computer Aided Surgery and is on the International Review Board for a number of recent Conferences in Advanced Robotics, Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention, as well as Haptics and Mechatronics Conferences. In June 2004, he was awarded the prestigious "Maurice Muller Prize", presented annually for outstanding contributions to Computer Aided Surgery and in 2006 he was presented with the IEE achievement medal for outstanding contributions to Medical Robotics.

In 1999 Brian founded the Company "ACROBOT Limited", as a spin-off of his research at Imperial College.
