Amira El Merhie graduated in Biomedical Engineering and Design at the Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne (France) in 2015, with a Master thesis entitled "A New Strategy to Improve Drug Delivery to the Maxillary Sinuses: The Sweep Frequency Acoustic Airflow". From 2015 to 2019, she accomplished her PhD studies in Biomedical Engineering at the Optical Nanoscopy group at the Italian Institute of Technology and the University of Genoa, submitting a thesis on the "Single-layer-graphene Biointerface: Studying Neuronal Network Development and Monitoring Cell Behavior over Time". The long term goal of her PhD project is the development of biosensors, and the study and understanding of materials that would serve as best candidates for use in regenerative medicine and neural implants.

Since March 2019, she has a postdoctoral position at the Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications group at the Italian Institute of Technology.

Her current research project is focused on testing several nanoplatforms based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as drug delivery systems, heat mediators and tumor targeting in 2D and 3D in vitro studies involving cancer stem cells of human glioblastoma. The study will also explore the behavior of cancer stem cells on micropatterned graphene substrates to observe whether the cells will have any preference of the ablated and/or graphene regions which could be exploited for cell sorting in the long run. Furthermore, the project will include studying the interaction of nanoparticles (NPs) of different surface charge with pathological or healthy neurons.
