Scientists
The professionals who actually carry out the research activities.
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR (PI)
The Principal Investigator (PI) is the person in charge of a research unit, directing scientific activities and coordinating team members. Research projects led by the PI may be directly related to IIT's institutional activities or result from winning national and international funding.
You can become a PI at IIT through a specific tenure track selection or by obtaining an award or funding, after IIT has assessed the scientific alignment of the project with the Foundation's strategic plan.
TECHNOLOGIST
A technologist holds a doctorate degree and has a highly specialized role in a specific scientific field. Technologists support research activities by managing and coordinating the facilities and a team of technicians specialized in using certain tools, frameworks, or protocols. They also apply the research results in the civil and industrial sectors through patent development and also foster relationships with the business world, promoting the Institute's scientific achievements.
How can I become a technologist?
You can become a technologist by applying for a specific open position or following an internal career path.
RESEARCHER
A researcher is a senior researcher with solid post-doc experience. They may be tasked by the Principal Investigator to coordinate small groups of junior researchers such as post-docs and doctoral students. They may also act as a reference for one or more specific projects assigned by the PI of the research unit in which they work.
You can become a researcher by applying for a specific open position or following an internal career path.
POSTDOC
A postdoc is a researcher who chooses to continue their scientific career immediately after obtaining a PhD. Their scientific activities are generally supervised by other senior researchers who support postdocs in areas closely related to their specific research field, as well as in fundamental career activities such as mentoring, teaching, and drafting applications for grants and funding.
RESEARCH FELLOW
A research fellow is a junior position, who does not have a PhD yet, and is eager to start a career in the research world. You can apply for a fellowship after obtaining a Master's to enter a doctoral program.
Technicians
Technicians, who have different levels of expertise within specific fields, play a crucial role in the research activities carried out at IIT’s laboratories, research units and infrastructures. A doctoral degree is not a prerequisite for this position.
Administration
All people involved in the operations of IIT's central administrations play key roles, performing highly qualified activities within the Institute's offices. Their responsibilities are technical, specialized, and coordination-related, contributing significantly to daily operations.
They directly assist scientific activities, provide essential support for technology transfer to civil and industrial sectors, draft projects, collect and manage scientific data, and create outreach materials. They also contribute to the overall efficiency of the Foundation, by overseeing management control, procurement, and human capital management.
