Research fellowship to develop an advanced wearable sensor system for human kinesiology - [ Fellow ]

The Dynamic Interaction Control Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is seeking to appoint a full-time research-fellow to develop advanced wearable sensor system for humans. The wearable sensor system shall allow robots to collaborate with human beings, providing a robot with information about the human kinesiology (e.g. human physiological, biomechanical, and psychological state). The wearable system will be then used in a control framework for human robot interaction. Applications are foreseen in both humanoid motion control and wearable technologies.

The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and have the opportunity to pursue research within “An.Dy - Advancing Anticipatory Behaviors in Dyadic Human-Robot Collaboration” project carried out in partnership with other universities, research institutes and companies in Europe. The An.Dy project is funded by the European Union's H2020 Programme with Grant Agreement 731540.

Research will be conducted at the Dynamic Interaction Control laboratory. The laboratory, led by Prof. Giorgio Metta in cooperation with Dr. Daniele Pucci, combines theoretical investigations with real-time practical implementation on real hardware and embedded electronics. The research activity leverages a unique background available at the iCub facility. Technological background: whole-body distributed tactile sensors, wearable force plates, tactile foot soles and whole-body distributed accelerometers and gyroscopes. Software background: humanoid contact force and joint torques estimation based on whole-body distributed heterogeneous sensors (tactile sensors, force/torque sensors, accelerometers and gyroscopes). Scientific background: Bayesian approach to solve inverse and forward dynamics computations with whole-body distributed sensing

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a MSc in Electronics, Robotics, Mechatronics, or other fields related to electronics-design/firmware-development/wearable-sensors. Candidates are required to have good technical and theoretical skills.

The work will focus on the development of a force and motion tracking system.

Desired qualifications:

  • MSc in electronics, robotics, or mechatronics;
  • Good technical and theoretical skills;
  • Experience in electronics-design and/or firmware-development and/or wearable-sensors;
  • Creative, proactive and collaborative attitude;
  • English language skills (written and oral).

The successful candidate will be offered a contract with a highly competitive salary.
