The IIT center, created from the cooperation between IIT and Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, aims to research and promote new technologies and to extend existing techniques for preservation and analysis of the invaluable cultural heritage CH assets managed by Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) across different fields of art.
Preservation will act at several levels, involving different research fields with the aim to immortalise (CH) artefacts through high-accuracy 3D digitisation techniques of GLAM assets in conjunction with newly developed coatings shielding the tangible assets from natural and human-generated decay. This strategic synergy will provide custom-based preservation solutions related to the structure (chemical composition and shape) of the artefact by sensing its current deterioration state as analysed by affordable and portable devices. On a different level, the center will research technology to preserve the more intangible, but not less important, value of GLAM assets.
Through the use of machine learning and retrieval techniques, the center will develop advanced tools to boost research and understanding of GLAM assets and their history for the Venetian territory and far beyond. To this end, it would be possible to associate at each (digital) artefact, not only the information about its creation, but also its connection in time-space to other digital assets as stored in various local and worldwide art databases.
