Post-doc opening in autonomous navigation for mobile robots - [ Postdoc ]

Workplace: Genova, IIT
Added on: 25/03/2019 - Expires on: 30/06/2019

The iCub team (https://www.iit.it/research/lines/icub) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is  looking for a highly motivated post doc researcher with strong enthusiasm to work with robotic platforms and skills to investigate (and implement) algorithms for autonomous navigation and self-localization in known environments. The project will be carried out on the R1 platform, a full-fledged humanoid specifically designed to operate in domestic and professional environments (e.g. hospitals).
A video description of the main characteristics of the R1 humanoid can be found at the following address:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBphNGW6m4o

Tasks will be:

  • Improve R1 capabilities, exploiting RGBD cameras, LIDARs, IMUs and additional sensors to carry out 3D mapping and autonomous navigation tasks;
  • Implement and/or integrate obstacle detection and obstacle avoidance algorithms in crowded and/or dynamically changing environments;
  • Exploit web/cloud services to improve R1 cognitive skills.

The research project will be carried on in collaboration with an industrial partner actively working in the field of service robotics in Healthcare.

Required qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Robotics or related fields;
  • Good knowledge of programming languages such as, C/C++, Java, Python, Lua;
  • Theoretical background and hands-on experience on navigation and localization techniques (SLAM) based on Lidar or RGBD sensors;
  • Good communication skills and ability to cooperate within a team.

Desirable skills:

  • Knowledge of middlewares for robotics (e.g. YARP, ROS);
  • Experience with ROS navigation stack and localization modules, such as: gmapping, AMCL, RGBDslam, RTABmap etc.;
  • Knowledge of Computer Vision and OpenCV library;
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques.

The successful candidate will be offered a salary commensurate to experience and skills.

Please apply by June 30, 2019, by sending your application to applications@iit.it quoting exactly BC76597 – KM1 – Post-doc in autonomous navigation for mobile robots in the e-mail subject.
