A Postdoctoral position is available at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia within the Center for Micro-BioRobotics in Pontedera (Pisa), Italy.

The post is based on a four-year research project on ‘Climbing Plants Inspiration’ for ‘Adaptable Growing Soft Robotics’ in the context of the European Union's Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation under the action entitled ‘Towards a new generation of plant-inspired growing artefacts - GrowBot (FET-Proactive grant agreement No. 824074, ,

Applicants must have a PhD degree in either mechanical, manufacturing, biomedical, electrical, polymer engineering, materials science, or related. The successful candidate will join the Bioinspired Soft Robotics (BSR) Research Line at IIT, which offers a uniquely collaborative scientific research environment and outstanding research facilities.

This Research Line, located at the Center for Micro-BioRobotics (CMBR) of IIT, aims at designing and developing new robotic solutions and advanced components by taking inspiration from Nature. The group works in a dynamic, international and multidisciplinary environment, combining engineering and biology and using plants and soft-bodied animals as biological models. Science-based research activities are combined with the development of application-driven robotic solutions and technology transfer.


  • Strong experience and knowledge in the following fields:
      • CAD design of multi-component systems (Siemens NX, SolidWorks, ProE or equivalent)
      • Analytical formalization of kinematic and dynamic robotic systems
      • Development of advanced robotic systems
  • Experience and knowledge of smart/multi-functional materials
  • Experience in manufacturing
  • Strong communication and English language skills (written and spoken)
  • Team work

The selected candidate will conduct innovative research activities in the framework of adaptive growing soft robotics. The position includes theoretical and hands-on research, collaborations with Post Docs, PhDs and MSc students, preparation of scientific publications and contribution to new grant proposals. The candidate must be capable to collaborate with a large, international and multidisciplinary team. Highly competitive salary will be offered to successful candidates.
