One position as Researcher in Computational Chemistry applied to biomolecular systems and functionalized nanoparticles of pharmaceutical relevance is available in the Molecular Modeling and Drug Discovery Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.
The open position is for candidates with extensive experience in the broad field of computational modeling and simulation, including the following areas: MD simulations and enhanced sampling methods (e.g., metadynamics), QM and QM/MM calculations for catalysis, and structure-based drug design (Docking, virtual screening, FEP calculations, etc). Experience in method development, programming and scripting abilities are highly desirable.
Ideally, the candidate will be the most senior member of the computational group and will have his/her own research projects to conduct. He/she must be a team player, who possesses a lively sense of scientific curiosity. He/she must still be interested in mastering new computational methods, as required. At the same time, he/she must be willing and capable to help young students and postdocs in the lab, in their daily operations and technical trouble shooting. Targets of interest in the lab include membrane-bound proteins, ion channels and transporters, DNA and RNA processing enzymes, and other metalloproteins of pharmaceutical interest. The group includes also members working in the wet-lab performing medicinal chemistry and molecular biology. Importantly, this experimental part is fully integrated with the computational studies for drug discovery, which has already generated a few advanced patented classes of compounds for cancer and neurological disorders. There is also an exciting new research line on the computational design and characterization of functionalized nanoparticles, in collaboration with outstanding experimental labs.
In summary, the candidate will play a key role in our research work centered on multiscale molecular modeling to understand function and inhibition of pharmaceutically relevant enzymes and functionalized nanoparticles. He/she will work in close contact with other computational chemists, as well as medicinal chemists and experimentalists in a cutting-edge research environment with state-of-the-art instrumentations, computer power, and labs.
Thus, he/she must possess a PhD in chemistry, physics, or related disciplines, being an outstanding and highly-motivated scientist with a strong record of research productivity.
