A postdoctoral position in “All-optical Brillouin microscopy for three-dimensional biomechanical imaging” will be available in the Center for Life Nanoscience at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (CLNS@SAPIENZA, Rome, Italy) within the Nanotechnologies for Neurosciences Research Line, specifically in the “IIT- CrestOptics” JointLab.
In order to merge scientific expertise with industrial development and prototyping know-how, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and CrestOptics Spa (a leading Italian company manufacturing advanced optical and electro-optical instruments for scientific and industrial applications) have started a facility in Roma called “JointLab” dedicated to exploring state of the art technology in microscopy and Life Science applications of optics and electro-optics.
The JointLab scientific program sees, as a major inspirational principle, the integration between basic scientific research and the development of technical applications. The research activities cover areas of science of high innovative content, representing the most advanced frontiers of modern technology, with wide application possibilities in various fields, from medicine to industry, from computer science to robotics, life sciences, and nanobiotechnology.
The project focuses on the development of a novel Brillouin microscope that will be used to characterize the three-dimensional biomechanical properties in the volume of cells and tissues. Standard methods to measure the mechanical properties are either invasive or lack of subcellular resolution, limiting the measurements across superficial topographies. Instead, Brillouin microscopy is an emerging technique that enables a noncontact, label-free and all-optical assessment of the mechanical properties with a resolution down to the optical diffraction limit.
The ideal candidate will work on the development of a new spectroscopic imaging device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering, aiming to a faster image acquisition time and an unprecedented spectral detail. In parallel, the candidate will assist on the optimization of a state-of-the-art Brillouin microscope (already present in our lab) operating in the spontaneous regime. Mechanical imaging on single cells and tissues will also be performed throughout the entire period of the project.
