A postdoctoral position on “3D Soft Mechanical Sensing” is being opened within the Artificial Touch in Soft Biorobotics Research Line (, of the Center for Micro-BioRobotics (CMBR), in Pontedera, Pisa.

The major objective is to design and develop innovative fully 3D soft mechanical (including tactile) sensing solutions for soft robotics, by means of 3D fabrication technologies, in particular 3D printing of multiple materials. 3D fabrication technologies will be investigated across multiple scales, from micro to macro. The final aim is to create new strategies in soft robotics for discriminating multiple mechanical stimuli (e.g. pressure, strain, vibration, etc.) by smoothly integrating form and function, also (but not solely) by considering bioinspired approaches.

We are looking for a bright scientist expert in the following:

  • Soft and smart materials, i.e. flexible and/or stretchable materials and/or conformable, conductive and non-conductive;
  • 2D ½ and 3D microfabrication technologies;
  • 3D printing;
  • Design of tactile and mechanical sensors;
  • Electromechanical characterization of miniaturized sensors.

The above competences/skills are highly desirable but not strictly mandatory. Experience on one of the following is an added value: two-photon lithography; bioinspired tactile sensing. Proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory.

The prospective candidate has background and/or Ph.D. in Material Science, Micro/Nanotechnologies, Soft Robotics, Biorobotics, or related fields. She/he is creative and motivated, with excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills, and will be expected to:

  • Proactively perform research in a team of senior researchers, post-docs and PhD students;
  • Collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Write R&D proposals;
  • Publish scholarly papers and attend international conferences, participate in meetings and other events.

The successful candidate will be offered a contract with a highly competitive salary that will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
