The Nanotechnology for Precision Medicine Research Line at IIT invites a sharp, enthusiastic, well-trained candidate to work on the development of MR-guided hyperthermia using focused radio frequency. This project involves the development of a new therapeutic modality for neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, based on novel concepts in focused RF. The goal is to develop algorithms and hardware aiming to non-invasively generate controlled local SAR hotspots and hyperthermia to modulate the permeability of the blood-brain barrier to molecules, nanoparticles and cells.

The ideal candidate will be supported for at least 2 years and will work at the interface of two laboratories: the Decuzzi Lab at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and the Rutt Lab at the Lucas Center for Imaging (Stanford, CA). Decuzzi lab focuses on the design, production and development of nanoparticles for drug delivery and multimodal imaging in a variety of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular and brain-related disorders. Rutt lab focuses on ultra-high field (7T and above) MRI technology development and applications. Ongoing applications projects include UHF MRI studies of multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and traumatic brain injury.

Experience and Skills


  • PhD in engineering, physics, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or related discipline
  • Experience with numerical modeling packages such as Sim4Life, CST, FEKO, HFSS, COMSOL
  • Experience with RF coil design and construction: transmit/receive coils, receive arrays, transmit arrays
  • Programming experience (Matlab, other scientific and software development environments)


  • Experience with circuit modeling software like ADS or AWR
  • Experience with CAD modeling using Autocad, Solidworks or similar packages
  • Basic electronics and mechanical workshop experience (e.g. on a CNC mill)

The Decuzzi and Rutt Labs include the following facilities and key equipment:

Electronics shop: Keysight E5080A VNA, 4 ports; Keysight FieldFox VNA, 2 Ports; Anritsu VNA, 1 port; Keysight DSO 7054B Oscilloscope; Tektronix DPO 4054 Oscilloscope; SPEAG DAK 12 probe

Machine shop: Tormach 770 CNC Mill; Stratasys Fortus 360mc 3D printer

MR scanners: one 7T GE Discovery MR950 (with 8ch pTx), one 3T GE Discovery MR750, one 3T GE Signa Premier, and one 3T GE Signa PET-MR (all 100% available for research, software compatibility between all scanners), as well as multiple animal MR scanners ranging from 3T to 11.7T.

Nanomedicine laboratory: DLS, Multisizer, TEM, SEM, ICP-MS, Clean Room facility with EBL and DLW for nano/microfabrication.
