Postdoc on “robot control for human-robot interaction (HRI)” - [ Postdoc ]

Workplace: Genova, IIT
Added on: 11/06/2018 - Expires on: 15/06/2019

The iCub team (https://www.iit.it/research/lines/icub) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to work on the topic of “robot control for human-robot interaction (HRI)”.

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to develop methods to generate realistic movements on our humanoid robots. The task involves the study and development of software methods for generating robot behaviors. The goal is to develop tools based on proper modelling languages (e.g. behavior trees or finite state machines) that allow iCub users to generate movement and sequences of behaviors/movements without hacking into the low-level controllers of the robot. The resulting software library will be used in a series of human-robot interaction experiments.

Additional information

This research is part of a large-scale project (robotics for theranostics), funded directly by IIT, that aims at developing innovative robotic technologies applied to the diagnosis and therapy of neuro-developmental disorders (NDDs), as well as to study neurotypical development. The robotics for theranostics program will integrate cognitive neuroscience, robotics and electronics to address the following grand challenges:

  • Improving the design of robots by tuning it to the needs of both typically and atypically developing individuals;
  • Designing, developing, and testing advanced robotic technologies for accurate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to autism and other NDDs;
  • Enhancing the social, cognitive and sensorimotor functioning of both typical and atypical developing individuals by developing innovative sensorial technologies and rehabilitation procedures.

Required qualifications/skills

  • PhD in computer science, robotics, computer engineering or related fields;
  • Knowledge of C/C++ programming languages and Linux/Windows development tools;
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in English (written and spoken);
  • Experience in robot control, motion and task planning;
  • Modelling languages for robot tasks (e.g. hierarchical finite state machines, behavior trees);
  • Knowledge of middleware for robotics (e.g. YARP or ROS);

The successful candidate will be offered a salary commensurate to experience and skills.

Expected start date could be July/August 2019.

Please apply by June 15th, 2019, by sending your application to applications@iit.it quoting exactly BC75195 – GSL-6 – Postdoc on robot control for HRI in the e-mail subject. Your application shall contain a detailed CV, a research statement, and contact information of two reference persons.
