Postdoc on “computer vision for HRI” - [ Postdoc ]

The iCub team (https://www.iit.it/research/lines/icub) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to work on the topic of “robot control for human-robot interaction (HRI)”. This project is in collaboration between the Humanoid Sensing and Perception Research Line and Social Cognition in Human-Robot Interaction Research Line.

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to develop computer vision methods to support human-robot interaction on our humanoid robots. The goal is to develop algorithms for human posture detection and compute communicative social cues that can be derived from the analysis of head and gaze direction or gestures (e.g. pointing). The candidate is expected to interact with a team of cognitive psychologists for the development of social behaviors in the iCub humanoid robot, and their validation in human-robot interaction experiments.

Additional information

This research is part of a large-scale project (robotics for theranostics), funded directly by IIT, that aims at developing innovative robotic technologies applied to the diagnosis and therapy of neuro-developmental disorders (NDDs), as well as to study neurotypical development. The robotics for theranostics program will integrate cognitive neuroscience, robotics and electronics to address the following grand challenges:

  • Improving the design of robots by tuning it to the needs of both typically and atypically developing individuals;
  • Designing, developing, and testing advanced robotic technologies for accurate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to autism and other NDDs;
  • Enhancing the social, cognitive and sensorimotor functioning of both typical and atypical developing individuals by developing innovative sensorial technologies and rehabilitation procedures.

Required qualifications/skills

  • PhD in computer science, robotics, computer engineering or related fields;
  • Experience with Computer Vision;
  • Experience in robotics and/or automatic control;
  • Knowledge of C/C++ programming languages and Linux/Windows development tools;
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Desired skills

  • Knowledge of basic machine learning, optimization techniques;
  • Knowledge of OpenCV
  • Knowledge of deep-learning frameworks (e.g. Caffe, Torch, TensorFlow, Thano);
  • Knowledge of middleware for robotics (e.g. YARP or ROS);
  • Experience in control or motion planning of robot;
  • Experience in working in interdisciplinary teams.
