The Advanced Robotics (ADVR) Research Line of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), an English-speaking research Institute, is seeking a highly motivated, full-time post-doc, who will have a leading research role in the design and control of an innovative collaborative robotic system for industrial applications within the Advanced Industrial Automation Lab (AIAL)

The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and will have the opportunity to pursue research within a project developed by IIT and an industrial partner operating worldwide in energy production and power plant maintenance.


In the past decades, industrial robotics has been the dominating sector in the robotic sales worldwide. However, there are indications that today's robotics market is about to undergo substantial changes.

The aim of the project is to create a new robot arm able to accomplish the inspection tasks

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in Robotics, Mechanics, Electronics or other fields related to design and control of robots, and with an excellent track record in the area of Robotics, Electronics or Mechatronics.

In this position, the candidate will have a key role in the team responsible for the design, development and control of the manipulator for inspection tasks.


The candidate should have proficiency in the design and control of robotics or mechatronic systems, and a strong portfolio of practical projects. We are seeking a motivated candidate with excellent hands-on competencies and proved experience in the field of robotics-related technologies such as electronics, mechanics, and programming.

The successful candidate should have the following skills:

  • PhD degree (already taken or expected to be taken very soon) in mechanical, electronics, engineering, physic or other technical/scientific areas.
  • Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner
  • Broad understanding of modern and innovative manufacturing techniques
  • Hands-on experience with analysis, design and testing of robotic systems
  • Experience in programming in Labview is welcome
  • Familiarity with data acquisition, control and communications with embedded systems is welcome.
  • Experience in mechanical design with, Creo etc., actuators and drives, hands-on system integration is welcome.
  • Experience in electronical design with, Altium, Orcad etc, is welcome.
  • Available to attend conferences, visit fieldworks, participate in meetings and other events;
  • Ability to work in a team, willing to join a group of young and enthusiast colleagues is a must.


The successful candidate will exploit a solid Foundation of established technologies within the Advanced Robotics Research Line. This foundation consists of extensive know-how on the design and control of mechatronics systems, key enabling technologies, actuation, sensing, embedded control, etc. The successful candidate will be involved in organizing the research and development activities in the assigned tasks, accomplishing project deliverables and communications through reports and demonstrations.
