The iCub Facility at Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, an English-language research institute, is seeking a highly motivated, full-time post-doc, who will have a leading research role in the design and control of an innovative collaborative gripper for industrial applications.
The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and will have the opportunity to pursue research within a project jointly developed by IIT with Camozzi Automation Group, an industrial partner operating worldwide in the automation field.
In the past decades, industrial robotics has been the dominating sector in the robotic sales worldwide. However, there are indications that today's robotics market is about to undergo substantial changes. Recently, promising advances have been obtained in the emerging sector of “compliant robots”, mostly from research laboratories and universities. Compliant robots are intended to interact with unstructured and dynamic environments. Possible application scenarios include human-robot interaction and collaboration, walking and running robots, prosthetic devices and exoskeletons, and more applications will probably be conceived as the sector grows.
The aim of the project is to create the next-generation of collaborative grippers that will be employed in factory plants working safely with, or in close proximity to, humans. The project objectives range from the development of a force sensing system to be used with pneumatic grippers to the development of a novel electrical collaborative gripper capable of interacting with the environment and with human operators. Investigation will include the design of a control system for grasping soft and fragile objects and the integration of sensors and electronics to enhance human-robot interaction.
We are looking for a scientist with a PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, or other fields related to design and control of robotic systems and an excellent record of accomplishment in the areas of Mechatronics, Control, and Robotics.
In this position, the candidate will have a key role in the team responsible for the design, development and control of the collaborative grippers.
The candidate should have proficiency in the design and control of robotics or mechatronic systems, and a strong portfolio of practical projects. We seek strong research and development skills in the areas of mechatronics and/or control with excellent hands-on competencies. A strong background on robot kinematics/dynamics, mechanism analysis and modelling will be highly appreciated.

The successful candidate will exploit a solid foundation of established technologies within the iCub Facility department. This foundation consists of extensive know-how on the design and control of mechatronics systems, key enabling technologies in haptic feedback, actuation, sensing, embedded control, etc. The successful candidate will be involved in organizing the research and development activities in the assigned tasks, accomplishing project deliverables and communications through reports and demonstrations.
