Post-Doctoral position on High-Frequency Printed Polymer Transistors – ERC Project “HEROIC” - [ Postdoc ]

Workplace: Milano, IIT@Polimi
Added on: 04/01/2018 - Expires on: 31/01/2018

Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia – IIT (www.iit.it) is opening a post-doctoral position on High-Frequency Printed Polymer Transistors, within the activities of the ERC Project “HEROIC”.

The HEROIC project (http://www.heroicproject.eu/) aims at filling the gap between the typically low operation frequencies of printed, organic flexible electronics and the high-frequency regime, by demonstrating polymer-based field-effect transistors with maximum operation frequencies of 1 GHz and complementary integrated logic circuits switching in the 10-100 MHz range, fabricated by means of printing and direct-writing scalable processes in order to retain low temperature manufacturability of cost-effective large area electronics on plastic. The project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 638059).

This position focuses on the deep investigation and optimization of injection and charge transport in novel printed polymer and hybrid semiconductors, in order to achieve “band-like” transport and thus drastically improve the carrier mobility in field-effect devices.

The selected candidate will collaborate with chemists and test various polymer and hybrid formulations, develop low-temperature deposition and printing processes on plastic, as well as uniaxial alignment procedures compatible with roll-to-roll coatings. He will then adopt various experimental techniques to investigate charge transport and charge injection. The expected output is a high mobility, printed thin film semiconductor, which can be integrated in field-effect transistor architectures for high-frequency operation.

Eligible applicants are required to have a PhD in either Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering (Energy, Physics, Chemistry, Materials, Electronics).

Proven experimental expertise in organic electronics device fabrication is a minimum pre-requisite, without which applications will not be considered. In particular, expertise in printed electronics will be considered a strong asset, as well as in polymer processing and electronic characterization of devices. The successful candidate is enthusiastic, independent and collaborative. He/she is fluent in English.

The closing date for applications is January 31, 2018 and applications, including a cover letter, CV and the names of 2 referees should be sent to mario.caironi@iit.it quoting “High-Frequency Printed Polymer Transistors CB 74883” in the subject line.

Salary will be commensurate to qualifications and experience and in line with international standards.

This research activity will be carried out in the “Printed and Molecular Electronics” Research Line under the supervision of Dr. Mario Caironi, located at the “Center for Nano Science and Technology” of the Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Milan (Italy).

IIT was established in 2003 and successfully created a large-scale infrastructure in Genova and a network of 10 state-of-the-art laboratories countrywide with an international staff of about 1100 people from more than 50 countries. IIT's research endeavour focuses on high-tech and innovation, representing the forefront of technology with possible application from medicine to industry, computer science, robotics, life sciences and nano-biotechnologies.

In order to comply with Italian law (art. 23 of Privacy Law of the Italian Legislative Decree n. 196/03), the candidate is kindly asked to give his/her consent to allow IIT to process his/her personal data.

We inform you that the information you provide will be solely used for the purpose of assessing your professional profile to meet the requirements of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.
