The Advanced Robotics Research Line at IIT, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, an English-language research Institute, is building an interdisciplinary team of highly motivated, full-time junior/senior engineers with key development roles in mechanical design, mechatronics, embedded systems, software development, and augmented and virtual reality user interfaces.

The selected candidates will join a motivated, inter-disciplinary group of researchers and engineers, and have the opportunity to pursue research and development within the project “Sistemi Cibernetici Collaborativi – Teleoperation” in collaboration with INAIL (“Istituto Nazionale per l'Assicurazione contro gli Infortuni sul Lavoro” - National Institute for Insurance against Workplace Injuries, Italy) CUP J32F17000950005.

The project will develop a novel, collaborative, master-slave teleoperation hardware and software system targeting operation in hazard-prone industries, with the aim of reducing risks to workers’ health and safety. It will utilize, develop, and integrate advanced technologies in tele-locomotion, tele-manipulation, and human-machine interaction. The project will be developed within an inter-disciplinary group (robotics, engineering, and ergonomics), in close collaboration with end-users. The objectives of the project are: (1) integration of a new hydraulic quadruped field robot; (2) development of a novel dexterous robotic manipulator arm for object grasping and manipulation; (3) development and integration of a novel master hand exoskeleton device for haptic tele-manipulation; and (4) development of novel user interaction interfaces for intuitive teleoperation using augmented reality and virtual reality systems.

The successful candidates will be offered a contract for the whole term of the project (36 months max.) with a highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Embedded Electronics Engineer ADVR INAIL CB: 74174

We are looking for a highly motivated embedded electronics Engineer with a Master’s Degree (or an excellent first Degree and equivalent experience) in Electronics, Mechatronics, or related field, with proven experience in the area of electronics design and embedded programming.

This position is ideal for a passionate embedded electronics and programming engineer who enjoys challenging projects at the forefront of technology. The successful candidate will develop high performance embedded electronics and firmware for wearable robotic devices for teleoperation of robots and immersive virtual reality applications. The project will be pursued thanks to our strong know-how in electronics applied to motor control, communications, load cells and other analogue and digital sensors, and will expand in new areas of user interface technologies. This role will requireclose collaboration with the rest of the research and engineering team from drafting system specifications to prototype completion and its integration into a fully functional teleoperation setup.

RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Work with the rest of the research and engineering team to draw specifications for the embedded electronic system that satisfy the requirements of motor control performance, sensing, communications, mechanical layout, connectivity and user interfacing for the best user experience.
  • Start from existing know-how in embedded control systems and design a system architecture that satisfies the above mentioned performance and functionality requirements of wearable robotic devices.
  • Design manufacture and debug the electronics PCBs, working from early on with suppliers to choose appropriate components and manufacturing methods.
  • Work together with the software and control team members to implement in firmware appropriate user modes and embedded control functionality for high performance control, communications targeting the best user experience.
  • Collaborate with other engineering personnel (software and hardware) to ensure the successful integration of their designs with the rest of the system.
  • Keeping up-to-date documentation of the system hardware and software and create user manuals of the developed systems.
  • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3+ years experience in embedded systems design for research, consumer electronics or industrial applications with a strong project portfolio
  • Experience in multilayer PCB design with software such as Altium, Eagle, etc.
  • Experience with PCB manufacturing (Multilayer, rigid, flexible and mixed, etc.) and the use of small footprint SMD components and Experience with PCB trouble-shooting (soldering de-soldering of SMD components using appropriate equipment)
  • Experience with board layout techniques for noise isolation in mixed digital and analogue amplification stages for high speed ADC, such as appropriate grounding, power supply isolation, component placement and track layout, is very welcome.
  • Experience with C, C++ programing of high performance microcontrollers such as Texas Instrument Tiva and Concerto microcontroller families (or similar from other manufacturers) and experience with development and debugging IDEs such as Code composer studio, IAR, etc. is required
  • Experience with high speed serial communications such as ISP, I2C, UART, Ethernet, EtherCAT
  • Appreciation of system requirements for high performance motor control loops for force feedback and haptics.
  • Basic understanding of control concepts and previous experience in embedded electronics and the implementation of standard algorithms (e.g. PID) for control of low power motors (<20W DC and/or brushless) or other types of actuators is very welcome.
  • Digital filtering techniques (e.g. FIR, IIR) for analogue sensors such as strain gauges and current sensor for motor control are welcome.
  • Experience with embedded TCP/IP stack implementations such as lwIP for Ethernet communications and embedded webservers in very welcome
  • Experience with real time embedded OS such as FreeRTOS will be very welcome
  • Experience with LCD, TFT touch screens with I2C, ISP, parallel interface and embedded graphics libraries for GUIs is a plus

    Software Developer ADVR INAIL CB: 74175

    We are looking for an extremely dynamic, motivated engineer with a Master’s Degree (or an excellent first Degree and equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, or other fields and proven expertise in the area of user interface development.

    The vision is the design of novel user interaction interfaces to transform the master-slave teleoperation paradigm through the use of novel augmented reality and virtual reality technologies. In the industrial environment, these tools will assist operators to visualize the operating field, the field robots, access real-time information, etc. They will form the primary systems for tele-navigation and bilateral haptic teleoperation of field robots through existing haptic master interfaces.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree OR excellent first degree and minimum 2 years’ experience in computer science, engineering, robotics, or related fields;
  • Experience developing software for interactive user interfaces using multi-threaded programming in Linux-based system with OOP languages, C++, etc.;
  • Familiarity with Virtual and/or Augmented Reality engines such as Unity and/or familiarity with Graphics Libraries such as OpenGL, OpenCV;
  • GUI design and knowledge of toolkits such as ROS RViz, Gazebo, Qt or others is a plus;
  • Strong team player, able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary, international research team and carry out tasks autonomously; English language skills preferred (or willingness to learn);

    We are looking for an extremely dynamic, motivated engineer with a Master’s Degree (or an excellent first Degree and equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, or other fields and proven expertise in the area of robot software development.

    The vision is to turn the newest version of the quadruped robot HyQ (developed by the Dynamic Legged Systems lab) into a field-ready machine that can operate in harsh outdoor environments. The existing software framework has to be improved and extended by increasing reliability & safety, improving the motion skills and perception systems, as well as the wireless communication to the master station, etc. A special focus lies on the integration of the machine into a novel master-slave teleoperation system with multi-modal operator input interfaces developed by the other project members. The role is for a key player who will contribute to extend the existing robot software framework to meet the requirements of the project.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree OR excellent first degree and minimum 2 years’ experience in computer science, engineering, robotics, or related fields;
  • Experience in using C, C++ and the OO paradigm (under Linux);
  • Experience in developing software for articulated robots (preferred);

    We are looking for an extremely dynamic, motivated engineer with a Master’s Degree (or an excellent first Degree and equivalent experience) in Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanics or other fields and proven expertise in the area of robotic or mechatronic systems.

    The vision is to turn the newest version of the quadruped robot HyQ (developed by the Dynamic Legged Systems lab) into a field-ready machine that can operate in harsh outdoor environments. The existing robot has to be improved and adapted to the project requirements. Additionally, the new robotic manipulator arm has to be properly integrated with the quadruped. This position will also have a key role in the execution, organization and logistics of the various field tests.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree OR excellent first degree and minimum 2 years’ experience in Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanics or related fields;
  • Experience with CAD (Unigraphics/NX, Creo) and GD&T;
  • A background in stress mechanics (with applications in FEA);
  • Experience in electric and electronic systems including power management boards, real-time communication bus (e.g. EtherCAT), EM shielding, reliable wiring, safety, etc.
  • Experience with firmware programming of micro-controllers, etc.
  • Hands-on experience, e.g., with university racing teams, or robot competitions;

  • Mechanical Engineer ADVR INAIL CB: 74178

    We are looking for an extremely dynamic, motivated engineer with a Master’s Degree (or an excellent first Degree and equivalent experience) in Mechanical or Mechatronics engineering or other fields who will have a key role in the area of mechanical design, assembly and debugging of prototype robotic systems.

    The vision is to develop the newest version of a robotic manipulator arm and the role involves specific responsibilities:

  • Design of mechanical parts using 3D/2D design software tools;
  • Interaction with mechanical workshops and evaluation of manufacturers and suppliers of non-standard parts;
  • Inspection and assemblage of mechanical parts;
  • Design and implemention of test-bed systems for new robot components; physicalevaluation and troubleshooting mechanical hardware issues;
  • Integration of mechanical and electronic components to fully assemble prototypes;
  • Operating workshop machinery including 3D rapid prototype machines as well as other standard workshop machineries to buildprototype mechanical components.
  • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree OR excellent first degree and minimum 2 years’ experience in Mechanical, Robotics, Mechatronics or related fields;
  • Excellent knowledge of CAD software tools (primarily with Pro-Engineer, CREO Parametric, and ANSYS, other relevant also welcome);
  • Very good experience in understanding and working with technical mechanical drawings;
  • 2 years of experience in the design/assembly and debugging of practical electro-mechanical systems;
  • Excellent hands-on skills in the assembly of mechanical parts;
  • Very good experience in interaction with mechanical workshop personnel as well as in operating standard workshop machinery.

    La produzione di IIT ad oggi vanta circa 6990 pubblicazioni, oltre 130 finanziamenti Europei e 11 ERC, più di 350 domande di brevetto attive, oltre 12 start up costituite e altrettante in fase di lancio. Dal 2009 l’attività scientifica è stata ulteriormente rafforzata con la creazione di dieci centri di ricerca nel territorio nazionale (a Torino, Milano, Trento, Parma, Roma, Pisa, Napoli, Lecce, Ferrara) e internazionale (MIT ed Harvard negli USA) che, unitamente al Laboratorio Centrale di Genova, sviluppano i programmi di ricerca del piano scientifico 2015-2017.

    IIT: the numbers

    Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a public research institute that adopts the organizational model of a private law foundation. IIT is overseen by Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca and Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze (the Italian Ministries of Education, Economy and Finance).  The Institute was set up according to Italian law 326/2003 with the objective of promoting excellence in basic and applied research andfostering Italy’s economic development. Construction of the Laboratories started in 2006 and finished in 2009.

    IIT has an overall staff of about 1,440 people. The scientific staff covers about 85% of the total. Out of 45% of researchers coming from abroad 29% are foreigners coming from more than 50 countries and 16% are returned Italians. The scientific staff currently consists of approximately 60 Principal Investigators110 researchers and technologists350 post-docs and 500 PhD students and grant holders and 130 technicians. External funding has allowed the creation of more than 330 positions . The average age is 34 and the gender balance proportion  is 41% female against 59% male.

    In 2015 IIT received 96 million euros in public funding (accounting for 80% of its budget) and obtained 22 million euros in external funding (accounting for 20% of its budget). External funding comes from 18 European Projects, other 17 national and international competitive projects and approximately 60 industrial projects.

    So far IIT accounts for: about 6990 publications, more than 130 European grants and 11 ERC grants, more than 350 patents or patent applications12 up start-ups and as many  which are about to be launched. The Institute’s scientific activity has been further strengthened since 2009 with the establishment of 11 research nodes throughout Italy (Torino, Milano, Trento, Parma, Roma, Pisa, Napoli, Lecce, Ferrara) and abroad (MIT and Harvard University, USA), which, along with the Genoa-based Central Lab, implement the research programs included in the 2015-2017 Strategic Plan.
