The Advanced Robotics Research Line at IIT (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Genoa, Italy) is looking for an outstanding, highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to work in the field of upper limb prosthetics development and clinical testing of a novel robotic synergy-based prosthesis.
The position is offered within “SoftHand Pro-H – A Soft Synergy-based Hand Prosthesis” project, funded by the European Union’s H2020 Programme with Grant Agreement 727536.
Although much has been done to develop advanced technology to tackle the real problems of individuals with limb loss, the current situation is still far from satisfactory. Active prostheses have high rejection rates and many individuals with limb loss use multiple prostheses to accomplish their daily tasks. SoftHand Pro-H is a proof-of-concept project aimed at tackling a particular facet of this problem by developing work-oriented upper limb prostheses using intuitive and robust soft synergy-based robotics technologies and control methods.
The post-doc will be primarily responsible for usability and feasibility testing of the SoftHand Pro-H prototypes with individuals with and without limb loss. This includes designing human subject testing protocols and ensuring necessary ethical approval as well as carrying out, analyzing, and disseminating results.
Further, the post-doc will work closely with design specialists to close the loop between mechatronics and control development and subject testing results and feedback.
Desired qualifications include:
- PhD degree in biomedical engineering or related field
- Experience in human subject testing (including protocol development, statistical analysis)
- Experience in human robot interaction
- Experience in prosthetics research and development preferred
- Understanding of mechatronic and/or controller development preferred
- Excellent publication record
- Creativity and proactive attitude
- Fluency in both spoken and written English
- Strong team player
