The Smart Bio-Interfaces Research Line (https://www.iit.it/research/lines/smart-bio-interfaces) is opening one Post-Doc position, in the framework of the ERC starting grant SLaMM, on advanced in vitro models and their exploitation for nanovectors testing.
The Smart Bio-Interfaces research line, led by Prof. Gianni Ciofani, is active in the field of smart nanomaterials for nanomedicine, bio/non-bio interactions, and biology in altered gravity conditions, and it is located at the Center for Micro-BioRobotics (CMBR) in Pontedera, Pisa. CMBR has fully equipped chemical, biological and microfabrication facilities, including clean rooms (class 1000 and class 10000), chemical laboratories, BSL2 biological laboratories, and equipment for molecular biology.
The candidate will work on the ERC granted project SLaMM (Magnetic solid lipid nanoparticles as a multifunctional platform against glioblastoma multiforme, EU contract number 709613), aiming at developing smart nanovectors for cancer therapy.
The selected candidate will be expected to have strong expertise in cell cultures, nanomedicine, and in micro/nanofabrication techniques for the preparation of microfluidic systems for biological investigations, in particular related to models of the blood-brain-barrier and of brain cancer microenvironment.
Applicants must have obtained their Ph.D. in one of the following areas: bioengineering, biotechnology, nanotechnology or related fields, from no more than 2 years at the date of application.,.
Experiences with microfabrication tools, confocal microscopy, and in vitro cell cultures are mandatory. Experience in blood-brain barrier-related research will be favourably evaluated. High level of English, both spoken and written, is an essential requirement.
Interested candidates should send their application (CV, list of publications, name and contacts of 2 referees) to applications@iit.it and to gianni.ciofani@iit.it by August 7th, quoting “1 Post-Doc Smart Bio-Interfaces - CB 78666” in the subject line.

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a public research institute that adopts the organizational model of a private law foundation. IIT is overseen by Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca and Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze (the Italian Ministries of Education, Economy and Finance). The Institute was set up according to Italian law 326/2003 with the objective of promoting excellence in basic and applied research andfostering Italy’s economic development. Construction of the Laboratories started in 2006 and finished in 2009.
IIT has an overall staff of about 1,440 people. The scientific staff covers about 85% of the total. Out of 45% of researchers coming from abroad 29% are foreigners coming from more than 50 countries and 16% are returned Italians. The scientific staff currently consists of approximately 60 Principal Investigators, 110 researchers and technologists, 350 post-docs and 500 PhD students and grant holders and 130 technicians. External funding has allowed the creation of more than 330 positions . The average age is 34 and the gender balance proportion is 41% female against 59% male.
In 2015 IIT received 96 million euros in public funding (accounting for 80% of its budget) and obtained 22 million euros in external funding (accounting for 20% of its budget).
