The Industrial Robotics Unit (URI) within the Advance Robotics Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), is looking for a highly motivated research fellow to work in the area of Robotics for Industrial Applications. In particular, URI is a new unit characterized by a strong expertise coming from Advanced Industrial Automation Lab and it deals with research and development of new technologies for industrial applications, based on a long-term vision of industrial needs. The main projects are carried out on in flexible multibody systems, in-hand manipulation, peripheral neuropathies detection devices, carton folding, etc.; some of these topics were granted by the EU Funding (Autorecon, EuroC, WearHap and SoftManBot). The aim of this area is also the development of tools that permit to research and develop new design exploiting the numerical model. Moreover, URI has published several papers and patents. The URI works on design and development of advanced robotic solutions for the industrial and automation needs of tomorrow. Our research projects, that are often in liaison with industrial partners, aim to the development of innovative robotic systems especially regarding manipulation and inspection activities. We are looking for a research fellow in the contest of a H2020 EU project SoftManBot GA 869885 (Advanced Robotic Technology for Handling soft Materials in Manufacturing Sectors, http://softmanbot.eu/ ) regarding the development of robotic systems for handling flexible and deformable materials with high levels of robustness and flexibility within labor-intensive production processes.  Special attention will be paid to the integration of novel robotic concepts based on aspects of safety, ergonomics, adaptability, acceptance and user experience. Industrially relevant pilot demonstrators will be implemented for four key manufacturing sectors: toys, textile, footwear and tires.

The fellow will be involved in activities related to development of the flexible robotic work cells, which are light weight, robust and with a large workspace. The scope of the activities include design, selection of hardware (sensors and actuators) and control scheme, control, testing and verification of design.

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary and international team including mechanical, electronic and industrial engineers, gain diverse industrial exposure and have a chance to see his designs come to fruition.

Research fellow position:

The successful candidate will work on the development of a mechatronics system capable of handling large deformations. Salient features of this system are:

  • Vibration control especially in flexible bodies.
  • Interaction and manipulation of deformable objects.

Essential criteria:                             

  • Candidates should have a master degree (or be very close to obtaining it) in one of the following areas: Mechanical engineering, Mechatronics or equivalent.
  • Experiences on basic mechatronics and machine design.
  • Experiences on sensing and actuation modules, development and integration.
  • Fluency in one or more of the following programming languages: ROS, Python, Labview and Matlab.
  • Willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into the projects.
  • Good communication skills in English.

Desired criteria:                               

  • Familiarity with deformable, flexible body control
  • Experience in modelling soft (or highly-deformable) objects
