The Advanced Industrial Automation Lab within the Advanced Robotics Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), an English-speaking research Institute, is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work in the area of Robotics for Industrial Applications in the framework of  SOFTMANBOT project funded by the European Union's H2020 Programme with Grant Agreement n. 869855..


Advanced Robotic Technology for Handling soft Materials in Manufacturing Sectors (SOFTMANBOT) is an industrial research project that will provide an innovative robotic system for handling flexible and deformable materials within labor-intensive production processes. The system will be composed by three main pillars: generic robotic perception (perception of the product and the human operator), a multi-sensor control and planning platform (advanced control algorithms for shape and contact servoing and AI-based task generalization) and smart dexterous grippers (smart mechanical design which will embody grasping/manipulation skills and integrate sensors, mainly tactile) able to handle soft components with high-levels of robustness and flexibility. Special attention will be paid to the integration of novel robotic concepts based on aspects of safety, ergonomics, adaptability, acceptance and user experience. Industrially relevant pilot demonstrators will be implemented for four key manufacturing sectors: toys, textile, footwear and tires. The successful candidates will work in a multidisciplinary team including mechanical, electronic and industrial engineers as well as physicists and mathematicians.

Postdoctoral position:

The successful candidate will work on the development of a novel perception system that will:

  • obtain the shape, level of deformation and contact points and forces of the objects to manipulate (toys, textile, footwear and tires).
  • obtain the position and orientation of human operators (specially their arms).
  • use methods either model-based (e.g., geometry, physics) or learning-based (e.g., deep learning) approaches.

Essential criteria:                             

  • Candidates should have a PhD (or be very close to submitting) in one of the following areas: Computer vision, Robotics, Deep learning, etc.
  • Expertise in 3D computer vision.
  • Experience with soft (or highly-deformable) objects: pose estimation, shape changes tracking, etc.
  • Experience in data analysis and with data analysis software.
  • Experience in deep learning.
  • Fluency in one or more of the following programming languages: ROS, C++, Python, Labview and Matlab (including Simulink).
  • High quality publication record (peer reviewed journals and conferences).
  • Ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into the projects.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary and regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
  • Strong communication and English language skills (written and spoken).
