Embedded Engineer position in the Humanoid and Human Centred Mechatronics Lab - [ Technical ]

The Humanoid and Human Centred Mechatronics Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), an English-language research Institute, is seeking to appoint a well-motivated outstanding young engineer with early experiences in electronics design and embedded software development. The work environment will be situated in the development of hardware components for ground-breaking novel robotic technology.

As the successful candidate you will be actively involved in our fast paced R&D activities within a young, interdisciplinary and agile team. As part of our international research group, you will have a central role in the development of embedded electronics and robotic hardware systems.         
You will work side-by-side with our control system and mechatronics engineers to bring the capabilities of our modular, efficient, flexible and powerful robots into real application. Your work will therefore be deployed on the robot platforms being developed in our lab, such as the Centauro platform (www.centauro-project.eu, www.alberobotics.it).

Requirements: The successful applicant holds a Master’s degree in a relevant subject and is expected to:

  • be highly enthusiastic about robotics and working in an international multidisciplinary research environment,
  • be a committed, responsible and respectful personality,
  • be a creative and curious mind,
  • be eager to make things work,
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language,
  • possess early experiences in electronics design and embedded software hardware development.

Responsibilities: The main duty of the position is the development of customized electronics and electrical solutions. These needs could include overall electrical/electronic design, component research and selection, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) schematic, layout, test and troubleshooting. The specific responsibilities would include:

  • performing mixed digital and analog circuit schematic capture and PCB layout for customized electronic devices,
  • creating electronic board prototypes and testbeds,
  • developing firmware for electronic boards associated to customized actuation, sensing and interface devices,
  • producing and maintaining revisions of documentations for electronic systems and firmware,
  • generating Bills of Materials (BOM's) and working with external electronic board workshops to create production ready circuit boards,
  • interacting with mechanical and robotics engineers and assisting in the assembly and wiring of electromechanical devices,
  • performing electronic circuit and firmware testing and troubleshooting.

Any experiences and knowledge related to robotics are a plus.
