The iCub team ( at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to work on the topic of “AI methods in human-robot interaction (HRI)”. This project is in collaboration between the Humanoid Sensing and Perception Research Line and the Social Cognition in Human-Robot Interaction (S4HRI) Research Line.

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to develop AI methods to support human-robot interaction on our humanoid robots. The ultimate goal is to develop computational building blocks necessary for efficient and social HRI.

The building blocks consist of computational models of human behavior in social interactions, algorithms for human posture detection and computation of communicative social cues that can be derived from the analysis of multi-modal cues (e.g. vision, audition and touch), head and gaze direction or gestures (e.g. pointing), as well as computational models of (social) attention. The candidate is expected to work in interdisciplinary environment, working with roboticists for development of algorithms and AI methods, and with a team of cognitive psychologists for the development of social behaviors in the iCub humanoid robot, and their validation in human-robot interaction experiments.

Required qualifications/skills

  • PhD in computer science, robotics, computer engineering, computational neuroscience, cognitive science or related fields;
  • Experience with computer vision and signal processing;
  • Experience with computational modeling of human behavior;
  • Experience in robotics and/or automatic control;
  • Knowledge of C/C++ programming languages and Linux/Windows development tools;
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Desired skills

  • Knowledge of basic machine learning, optimization techniques;
  • Knowledge of OpenCV
  • Knowledge of deep-learning frameworks (e.g. Caffe, Torch, TensorFlow, Theano);
  • Knowledge of middleware for robotics (e.g. YARP or ROS);
  • Interest in human-robot interaction
  • High interest in social cognition and cognitive science
  • Experience in working in interdisciplinary teams.
