The Nanotechnologies for Humans and Biosystems research line of IIT at the Center for Biomolecular Nanotechnologies (CBN, Lecce), in cooperation with the Electronic Design Laboratory (EDL) Facility, is searching for a highly motivated Researcher for research projects on smart system design for rapid prototyping of low-power electronic systems development related to transducer interfaces design for MEMS sensors, actuators, photonics and energy harvesters.

The scientific contribution will focus on the design and implementation of various and complex electronic systems (smart systems) including signal conditioning, digital processing, power management and wireless transmission sub-systems. The technical contribution will focus on both hardware and firmware design for specific electronic systems to interface existing transducers, in particular using rapid-prototyping at all levels, both from a hardware and software viewpoint. These systems will be a fundamental part of the research and will be highly instrumental to other scientific domains.

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment in the context of an advanced research and development team, specifically focused on rapid prototyped electronic design. The position requires a Ph.D. preferably in electronic engineering or bioengineering and excellent knowledge in spoken and written English.

In addition to an appropriate scientific background on smart and electronic systems design in general, the applicant profile shall embrace expertise in as many as possible of the following areas:

  • Arduino and Raspberry PI-based hardware design;
  • Sensor data acquisition;
  • Biosignals read-out and processing;
  • Hardware and electronic design, comprising both schematic and physical-level PCB design;
  • Low-level and firmware-level programming (e.g., using C, C++);
  • High-level programming (e.g., C, C++, Python);
  • Microcontroller and microprocessor architectures;
  • Linux and Windows operating systems;

Knowledge/expertise in the following topics will be also appreciated:

  • Low-power electronics;
  • Wired or wireless communication networks;
  • Micropython;
  • Algorithms and advanced programming.

The applicant has to show interest in increasing her/his knowledge and skills in the fields of hardware and software design, to enable an effective, continuously evolving and rapid co-design.

The design needs to follow a structured methodology to match the requirements of the EDL (software versioning, commercial CAD tools and consolidated design flows to reach a high robustness level and technology transferability for software solutions).
