The Center for Synaptic Neuroscience and Technology of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia at IRCCS San Martino Hospital (Genoa, Italy), is offering a postdoctoral position within the Neuroscience and Smart Materials Research Line (NSYN webpage: https://www.iit.it/it/centers/iit-central-research-laboratories/nsyn-unige) for the project “Nanosparks: innovative strategies for the treatment of retina neurodegeneration under the supervision of prof. Fabio Benfenati.

We are looking for a talented and motivated post doc who will join our team to study innovative opto-neural interfaces, such as photosensitive polymeric nanoparticles for the stimulation of neural cells and tissues ex vivo and in vivo. In more detail, the project will investigate in vitro and ex vivo light-sensitive smart materials including nanoparticles, photochromic molecules and optogenetic probes and investigate their effects in vivo through the behavioral and electrophysiological analysis of the processing of visual information from the retina to the visual cortex, with the aim of setting up innovative strategies for the treatment of degenerative blindness. The candidate will join a very multidisciplinary team (from surgeons, to biologists, to physicists) with the final aim of translating a photosensitive nano-technology into a therapeutic tool. 

The successful applicant must have a PhD in Neuroscience, Neurophysiology or similar subject and an in-depth experience in electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy and image analysis, behavior and in-vivo recordings of animal models.

Salary and benefits are competitive for international standards.
