Chief Technician in Mechanical Area - [ Technical ]

The iCub team ( at Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is seeking a highly motivated and full-time Chief Technician to work on the mechanical design of mechatronic systems.

The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the conceptualization, design, CAD modeling, fabrication, installation and testing of mechatronic systems in projects related to the iCub robot.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage a small team of committed and talented engineers.
  • Organize the day-to-day activities and monitor the project progress.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (electronics, software) to ensure successful system integration.
  • Interact with external contractors (e.g. workshops, manufacturers and suppliers).
  • Design and optimize 3D/2D models of mechatronic parts and assemblies.
  • Generate detailed technical documentation for 3D/2D assembly and parts manufacturing.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues.

Required Skills:

  • Strong expertise in mechanical design, with experience in the field of humanoid robotics.
  • At least four years of work experience.
  • Leadership in developing and deploying robot systems and tools for evaluating them.
  • Proficiency in hardware design and mechanism analysis with a proven portfolio of practical designs and excellent hands-on practical skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of design software tools (primarily with PTC Creo and ANSYS, other relevant also welcome).
  • Understanding of basic and innovative manufacturing techniques, fabrication methods and material selection.
  • Knowledge of Matlab, Simulink and Object Oriented Programming.
  • Capability to generate simulation models like URDF for Gazebo, or other similar robotics software.
  • Solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics and physics.
  • Understanding of strain gauging techniques and sensor selection.
  • Team player skills with the ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner (English language).

Additionally, preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Hands-on experience with analysis, design and testing of robotic systems, showing a portfolio of previous projects, publications, etc.
  • Knowledge of composite material construction techniques and properties.
  • Fundamental understanding of stress mechanics.
  • Experience with AGILE working framework and tools.
  • Experience with CI and automatic testing tools.

The successful candidate will exploit a solid foundation of established technologies within the iCub research line and will rely on our fully-equipped machine shop. This foundation consists of extensive know-how on the design and control of mechatronics systems, key enabling technologies in haptic feedback, actuation, sensing, embedded control, etc.


The successful candidate will be offered a highly competitive salary, which will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
