Post Doc call - Define the molecular signature of the muscle-nerve interplay and in the pathogenesis of ALS

BC:67966

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is a private law Foundation, created with special Government Law no. 269 of September 30th 2003, with the objective of promoting Italy's technological development and higher education in science and technology. Research at IIT is carried out in highly innovative scientific fields with state-of-the-art technology.

A postdoctoral position will be available starting from October 1st 2013 in the Center for Life Nanoscience at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (CLNS@SAPIENZA), Rome, Italy to work on the generation and characterization of novel transgenic animal models of ALS disease and on the development of in vitro cell co-culture systems to study the interplay between muscle and nerve.

A crucial aspect of the project deals with setting up appropriate cellular and animal model systems where to study the activity of wild type and mutant ALS-associated proteins.

An important aspect of the project is to develop/improve cell culture technology (bi - and 3 dimensional co-culture systems) between myogenic and neuronal cells to mimic -in an ex vivo system- the physiopathologic interplay between muscle and nerve, to study and better manipulate the critical signals emanating from the two tissues, and to define potential diagnostic tools for classifying the progression of the disease.

Research at IIT is carried out in highly innovative scientific fields with state-of-the-art technology.

A postdoctoral position will be available starting from February 16th 2013 in the Center for Life Nanoscience (CLNS) recently set up by the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" to work at the microscopy technological platform.

The project will explore:

  1. Advanced microscopy techniques involving Confocal, Widefield and Multiphoton microscopes for in vitro and in vivo studies of biological samples.
  2. Study of the dynamics of biological processes by live cell imaging in "real-time". Advanced techniques will include: Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP), Fluorescence Loss In Photobleaching (FLIP), Photoconversion, Photoactivation, Photoswitch and others.
  3. Development of non-standard new "ad-hoc" tools, platforms and software for imaging analysis by integrating and interfacing different disciplines: biology, physics and engineering.

Ideal candidates should have a PhD in Biology or Physics and a good knowledge of both Italian and English.

The position requires excellent and specific skills in the most up-to-date and cutting edge imaging techniques. In particular, candidates with an experience in live cell "real-time" imaging will be preferred. Experience with imaging software for acquisition and analysis (e.g. IPLab, MetaMorph, ImageJ, Fiji and others) is favored. Extensive experience and competence in molecular and cellular biology as well as biochemistry are also necessary.

The position carries significant responsibility and requires exceptional reliability. Importantly, the chosen candidate will closely interface with other researchers coming from different backgrounds, such as molecular and cellular biologists, physics, and engineers, for the development and improvement of new microscopy platforms to meet the needs of the research lines of the Life-Nanoscience IIT@Sapienza outstation. Therefore, the position requires particular aptitude and enthusiasm to interact and collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines.

We value scientists with a proactive attitude and results-oriented mindset, good interpersonal and communications skills and ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary research team.

The employment will be for 3 years. An internationally competitive salary, dependent on experience, will be offered.

Interested applicants should submit CV, list of publications, a statement of research interests, and the names of at least two referees both to Prof. Giancarlo Ruocco ( Questo indirizzo e-mail è protetto dallo spam bot.
