Darwin Caldwellha conseguito la Laurea e il Dottorato in Robotica presso l'Università di Hull, rispettivamente nel 1986 e nel 1990.

Nel 1994 ha conseguito un Master in Management all'Università di Salford. È rimasto all'Università di Salford dal 1989 al 2007 come assistente, docente e lettore per poi diventare titolare della cattedra di Robotica Avanzata nel Centro di Robotica e Automazione dell'Università di Salford (1999-2007).

È professore visitatore all'Università di Manchester, all'Università di Sheffield, al King's College di Londra e all'Università del Galles, Bangor.

Daniele Piomelli ha studiato in Italia, dove è nato e dove si è laureato in Farmacia nel 1982. Nel 1983 si è trasferito a New York, dove ha studiato Farmacologia e Neuroscienze presso la Columbia University con James H. Schwartz e Eric Kandel, e successivamente presso la Rockefeller University con Paul Greengard.

Entrambi i suoi mentori hanno ricevuto il Premio Nobel nel 2000 per il loro contributo nel campo della neurofarmacologia.

Dopo aver lavorato all’INSERM di Parigi e al Neurosciences Institute di San Diego (California), il dott. Piomelli è entrato a far parte dell’Università della California, a Irvine, dove è docente di Farmacologia e titolare della cattedra Louise Turner Arnold in Neuroscienze.

Vittorio Murino is full professor at the University of Verona, Italy, and director of the PAVIS (Pattern Analysis and Computer Vision) department at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. He took the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering in 1989 and the Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science in 1993 at the University of Genova, Italy.

He held a post-doctoral position from 1993 to 1995, working in the Signal Processing and Understanding Group of the Dept. of Biophysical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Genova as supervisor of research activities on image processing for object recognition and pattern classification in underwater environments. From 1995 to 1998, he was assistant professor at the Dept. of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Udine, Italy, and since 1998 he works at the University of Verona. He was chairman of the Department of Computer Science from 2001, year of foundation, to 2007. Prof. Murino is scientific responsible of several national and European projects, and evaluator of EU project proposals related to several frameworks and programs.

Enzo Di Fabrizio is director of the Nanostructures Department at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genova since 2009. He is also full professor of Physics at the University of Magna Grecia in Catanzaro (UMG) and director of the Bio and Nano engineering for Medicine-BIONEM Laboratory at UMG.

Doctor in physics at University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1987, his research in micro and nanotechnology started more than 20 years ago. He spent several years as visiting and associate scientist at the centre of excellence for X-ray lithography (CxrL) at University of Madison-Wisconsin, US. In 2001 he became permanent senior scientist and research director at INFM, where he was responsible for advanced projects on micro and nanofabrication at TASC laboratory and ELETTRA synchroton in Trieste; there he founded the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Litography (LILIT) for which he designed and built beamlines labs for soft and hard X-ray lithography. In 2004 he became Full Professor of physics at the University of Magna Graecia in Catanzaro and in 2007, 2011, 2012 he has been appointed as visiting Professor at IUSS in Pavia.

Liberato Manna received his MSc in Chemistry from the University of Bari (Italy) in 1996 and his PhD in Chemical Sciences from the same University in 2001. During his PhD studies, and later as postdoctoral fellow, he worked at the University of California Berkeley (USA).

In 2003 he moved back to Italy, as staff scientist at the National Nanotechnology Lab of CNR-INFM in Lecce, (Italy) where he became later responsible for the Nanochemistry Division in 2006.

In April 2009 he moved to the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Genova as head of the Nanochemistry Department.

Alberto Diaspro was born in Genoa, Italy, on April 7, 1959. He received is doctoral degree in electronic engineering from the University of Genoa, Italy, in 1983. He is University Professor in the Applied Physics Area. He is Head of the Nanophysics Unit of the Italian Institute of Technology.

AD is member of the University advisory Commitee for PhD Courses in Biotechnology (University of Genoa) and Medical Nanotechnology (University of Milan). AD has collaborations with IFOM - FIRC Oncology Institute, Milan, the Institute of Biophysics of the National Research Council (CNR) and NBT-IIT, Italian Institute of Technology. AD founded LAMBS (Laboratory for Advanced Microscopy, Bioimaging and Spectroscopy, www.lambs.it). AD is author of more than 170 international ISI publications. He is the President of OWLS (Optics With Life Sciences) and ICO (International Commission of Optics) representative.

Fabio Benfenati
Nato a Bologna in 5 novembre 1954.

John Assad ha conseguito la laurea di primo livello presso la State University di New York e il Dottorato in Neurobiologia presso la Harvard University.

Le ricerche del suo Dottorato sono state focalizzate sui meccanismi della trasduzione meccano-elettro sensoria nelle cellule vestibolari dell’orecchio.

Ha svolto il suo tirocinio post laurea in elettrofisiologia con John Maunsell, prima presso l’Università di Rochester e poi presso il Baylor College of Medicine, dove ha studiato il meccanismo della percezione visiva. È entrato a far parte del corpo accademico della Harvard Medical School nel 1996 ed è stato nominato professore ordinario ad Harvard nel 2007.
