Postdoc in Ultrafast high resolution microscopy
1 position for 2 years, starting in February 2012
The ability to investigate and manage very fast phenomena has a deep impact on today's life, with applications ranging from information and communication to energy production and delivery.
The relevant phenomena in organic (as well as inorganic) electronics cover a very wide range of timescales, strictly related with the size of the systems involved according to the thumb's rule: the smaller the system, the faster its time evolution. Today's electronics already reach THz frequencies, i.e. ps cycle periods, while investigation of the ultrafast phenomena has reached nowadays the femtosecond and even attosecond timescale. The physical length scales of these ultrafast phenomena range from tens down to few nanometers, requiring a corresponding resolution during the investigation and eventually the production of the devices.
Investigation capabilities down to the attosecond timescale and to the atomic size are available through pump-probe techniques, based on the infrared to the ultraviolet pulsed lasers, and electron as well as scanning probe microscopies, respectively. However, due to the diffraction limit of traditional optical microscopes, the time and space resolution are usually available only separately, allowing time resolved – ensemble averaged measurements or time averaged imaging.
Research
You will be based at the Center for Nano Science and Technology (CNST) of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), which is operating in strict collaboration with the Physics department of Politecnico di Milano, and has one main objective in the development of organic electronics.
Your project goal will be the development of a single time resolved imaging and spectroscopic tool, working at the same time with ultrafast and nanoscopic capabilities, to be applied mainly to the study of organic and inorganic electronics.
Ultrafast imaging has a well-recognized pioneer in the A. H. Zewail, who developed ultrafast transmission electron microscopy at Caltech in the last few years (after being rewarded with the Chemistry Nobel prize in 2000), while ultrafast scanning probe microscopy is being developed by several groups and is in a feasibility stage. Organic electronics devices are already appearing on the consumer market with the first OLED screens, while a huge development is foreseen from plastic and graphene applications, with new devices as well as improvements of the traditional Si electronics. From a general point of view, both fields of ultrafast imaging and organic electronics have the potential for an explosive and rewarding development in the next years, with the first being still in its infancy and very open for innovation and creativity.
The project will bring together a world recognized excellence in ultrafast laser sources with assessed skills in electron and scanning probe microscopies.
Prerequisites
The ideal candidate has recently obtained a Ph.D. in either engineering, physics or related disciplines. Hands-on laboratory experience on either ultrafast pulsed lasers, optical, electron and scanning probe microscopes is very beneficial. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, enthusiastic, is fluent in English and possesses good interpersonal skills.
Salary
Starting from 30,000 Euro on annual basis plus benefits.
Application
Please send your CV and motivation letter, clearly stating how you could contribute to the success of the project, to: Dr. Alberto Tagliaferri, alberto.tagliaferri@fisi.polimi.it
In order to comply with the Italian law (art. 23 of Privacy Law of the Italian Legislative Decree n. 196/03), we have to kindly ask the candidate to give his/her consent to allow IIT to process his/her personal data.
We inform you that the information you provided will be used solely for the purpose of assessing your professional profile to meet the requirements of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.

Internships at Nanochemistry Department
Two internships (maximum 9 months) are available at the Nanochemistry Department of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Genova:
Topic 1: Novel catalytic materials based on nanocomposites for water gas shift reaction and selective carbon monoxide oxidation
Environmental concern is pushing academic and industrial research to look for renewable and sustainable alternative energy sources that will, in the middle-long term, replace fossil fuels. The target is more and more urgent also because of the depletion of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Hydrogen is a clean and efficient energy carrier that could be used to feed electrochemical devices, fuel cells, to supply energy both for stationary and mobile applications. The only economically affordable way to produce hydrogen on industrial scale, at present, is through steam reforming of natural gas. In the middle term natural gas should be replaced by alcohols, especially derived from biomass. All of these raw materials lead to the unavoidable side production of carbon monoxide (CO). CO causes the poisoning of platinum electrodes of low temperature fuel cells and have to be reduced below 10 ppm.
In general, a CO removal unit is provided downstream a reforming unit which produces the reformed gas rich in hydrogen, and CO is selectively converted and removed through a series of reactions (water gas shift reaction, WGSR, CO + H2O = CO2+ H2 and, e.g., selective carbon monoxide oxidation, PROX) in order to obtain a CO concentration in the reformed gas <10 ppm. Typical catalysts for CO conversion are based on Cu-Zn, CeO2-Au, and Fe3O4-Au. The aims here are to prepare new porous composite materials made of metal oxide nanocrystals/metal domains and to test their catalytic performance. These composites are expected to exhibit catalytic properties towards the WGSR and PROX. The steps involved will be: (a) Synthesis of various metal-metal oxide (MO) based nanostructures (by employing both non-hydrolytic and hydrolytic methods). (b) Assembly of these A-MO heterostructures to form composite materials. (c) Catalytic tests. (d) Catalyst characterization.
For further details concerning this topic, please contact: liberato.manna@iit.it, tania.montanari@iit.it
Applications, including cover letter, CV, and the contact information of at least two references should be emailed to tania.montanari@iit.it. For consideration, please apply by February 15th 2012.
Topic 2: lithium ion batteries exploiting nanocrystals
The aim of this research theme is to develop nanocomposite materials for lithium ion batteries applications. In lithium ion batteries, the demanding task is to synthesize and characterize both positive and negative electrode materials in terms of size, shape and right stoichiometry. A wide range of transition metal oxides, hydrides, sulfides, phosphates, their composites and semimetals conjunction will be explored. For this aim, colloidal, autoclave, microwave and vapor phase synthetic routes will be exploited. A focus is upon how the nanocrystal's shape anisotropy (from spherical shape to rod like to wire like) is expected to play a role in the battery's overall performance. Electrochemical studies will be followed at every level of the nanostructure's process and upon the cell assembly. As a result of multiple synthetic provisions, there is also an opportunity to refine and modify the cell fabrication process.
