Bio

Alberto Ascia received a M.S. degree in "Computer Science Engineering" and a Ph.D. degree in "Electronic Engineering, Automation and Control of Complex Systems" at University of Catania, in 2005 and 2009 respectively.

Currently holds a Post Doc position at the Cognitive Humanoids Laboratory, part of Robotics, Brain & Cognitive Sciences Department.  His research interest is focused on the development and optimization of tactile sensors based on different architectures.
Previously, A. Ascia has been involved in the design, development and characterization of sensors and actuators based on smart materials, in particular magnetic fluids.

Projects

Roboskin will develop and demonstrate a range of new robot capabilities based on robot skin tactile feedback from large areas of the robot body. An investigation of these issues until now has been limited by the lack of tactile sensing technologies enabling large scale experimental activities, since so far skin technologies and embedded tactile sensors have been mostly demonstrated only at prototype stage. The new capabilities will improve the ability of robots to operate effectively and safely in unconstrained environments and also their ability to communicate and co-operate with each other and with humans.
