Bio

Coordinator of the Centre for Nanotechnology Innovation, IIT@NEST, Pisa

Director of the Nanomedicine Department of the IIT@NEST

Director of the Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis unit (PRIAn) of the IMT, Lucca.

After completing his undergraduate Physics studies at the University of Rome, Angelo earned a PhD in Physics from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and a Master in Business Administration from Alma Graduate School, University of Bologna.

His career includes spells in academia and in industrial R&D. Angelo worked at the University of Berkeley (California), University of Leiden (The Netherlands) and at the Institute of Cancer Research (UK), where he obtained the status of Teacher of the University of London. For 9 years he headed the Neuroimaging Department of the Medicines Research Center of Glaxo-Smith Kline, a large research-based pharmaceutical company, in Verona, Italy. In 2010 he joined the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, where he took roles of increasing responsibility.

Angelo acts as a consultant to large and medium-sized companies in the areas of pharmaceutics and diagnostic imaging.

Angelo’s research interests are focused on biomedical imaging, and on the development of-imaging probes and drug delivery systems. He has hands-on experience in all phases of development of pharmaceutical and imaging agents, ranging from design and characterization of the basic physico-chemical properties, through the pre-clinical validation, up to the early clinical phases.

Active research projects include:

-          functional and pharmacological MRI for the study of addiction and other disorders of the central nervous system

-          nanostructured drug delivery systems

-          aptamer- and peptide-based mechanisms for targeted delivery to the CNS

-          development of ratiometric probes for MRI

-          nanofabrication of contrast agents for NIRS imaging

-          graph-based correlation analysis of image time-series

Angelo has authored ca 70 papers, patents and book chapters. He has ca. 1200 citations in the Scopus database, and an h-factor=23. He has delivered more than 130 presentations at international conferences and scientific institutions.

In 2004 he was awarded the Sapio Prize for Italian Research.
