Scanning Probe Microscopy

Our research efforts are aimed to the investigation of the physico-chemical properties of surfaces, particularly in the form of thin films, in different environments (air, liquids, and vacuum). Depending on the research activity the investigated samples are either of biological character (e.g. protein layers, cells, and biomembranes) or not (inorganic or organic materials of interest in material science).

Spectroscopy and Optical Processes

The activity of the spectroscopy and optical processing laboratory includes the optical characterisation of materials and study of radiation-matter interaction. In order the achieve this, continuous and impulse laser sources with different wavelengths are used, ranging from near infrared to deep ultraviolet, with impulses varying in time from femtoseconds to nanoseconds.

Micromachining

Laboratory activity is mainly focused on the following areas: i) micro-manufacturing; ii) photo-polymerisation; iii) excitation of photochromic molecules; iv) production of fibre Brag grating laser for sensoristics.

Material Science

The laboratory provides structural and mechanical characterisation for nanomaterials produced in nanochemistry laboratories, and for photocromic molecules and their compounds in polymeric matrixes.
