Biomedical Robotics

With rapidly aging populations and increasing demands for new and enhanced medical and rehabilitation procedures, the demands on health services worldwide are becoming critical. To address this, it is suggested that robots or robot-enabled technologies may have a significant part to play in the future of healthcare.

Biomedical research at the IIT focuses on activities such as rehabilitation, training/simulation, micro-biomanipulation, and microsurgery. These areas currently depend on labor intensive manual procedures performed by highly trained professionals. Our goal is to improve and transform these operations through teleoperation and automation. Robot-assisted teleoperated systems have the potential to improve the success of the operations by offering precise and intuitive control interfaces to operators. Automated procedures, on the other hand, can enable high-throughput operations based on fast and precise positioning of the robotic tools. Applications of these new technologies include rehabilitation, cell and embryo microinjections, medical training, and robot-assisted microsurgeries.
